Obituary for Dorothea Caroline Hyatt (Muncey)

Dorothea Caroline Hyatt, 86, of Otto, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 3, 2006.

She was the daughter of the late Warren Fisher Muncey and Ethel Dorothea Kirk Muncey. She was married to the late Richard Edwin Hyatt, Sr. who died in 1999 and was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren and Raymond Muncey. Dorothea was a member of the Franklin Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Dorothea met a salesman, Richard Edwin Hyatt, when she was 21 and married him six weeks later. The two raised nine children, living in New Jersey, Florida, North Carolina, Arkansas and Indiana. In 1970, they settled in Otto, NC. They built a five bedroom house with two baths, two living rooms, two greenhouses, two kitchens, and several porches. The house served as a setting for many Christmas parties often attended by 40-50 people. Dorothea read every book in the Franklin, NC library, checking out ten books every week and reading every page. One could ask her a question on history, geography, or science; she always had a swift and correct answer, including the rare "I don't know." She loved growing plants. She and her husband picked wild flowers one morning on the way to church. After that, they grew flowers and provided bouquets every Sabbath morning for the church service.

She is survived by five sons, Richard Hyatt, Jr. of Otto, Robert Hyatt of Clarksville, TN, Philip Hyatt of Buford, GA, Gregory Hyatt of Covina, CA and Mark Hyatt of Lawrenceville, GA; four daughters, Betty Cangelosi of Frenso, CA, Ellen Graley of Lawrenceville, GA, Dorothy Harman of Surry, VA and Nancy Martling of Calhoun, GA; four brothers, Donald Muncey, Jim Muncey and Bill Muncey all of Tampa, FL and John Muncey of Otto, NC; two sisters, Marie Williams of Old Town, Florida and Peggy Garrett of Tampa, FL; 26 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 7, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Elder Carl Ashlock will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemtery.

The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.
