Obituary for Dewitt Talmadge Thompson

Dewitt Talmadge  Thompson
Dewitt Talmadge Thompson, 88, of Franklin, passed away February 22, 2010.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Wilfred Thompson and Alice Estes Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Dewitt Thompson; two brothers, J.R. Grady Thompson and Robert C. Thompson and a sister, Eulia Thompson. Dewitt was a former Sunday School Teacher, superintendent, clerk and served as historian for Sugarfork Baptist Church. He was a US Navy Veteran and served with the 11th Naval Beach Battalion; served on the USS Dauphine in WWII; was a Master Machinist Mate and member of the VFW and American Legion. He worked for Burrell Motor Company and later retired from the Postal Service.

Dewitt is survived by his wife of 68 years, Pauline Teem Thompson; three children, Janice Henry of Cullowhee, Annette Thompson of Franklin and Carol Hedden of Franklin; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, at Sugarfork Baptist Church. Rev. Steve Reeves, Rev. Daniel Trantham and Rev. Jim Crayton will officiate. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108. Burial will be in the Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Michael Henry, Gary Henry, Larry Pickens, Cole Henry and Mikey and Justin Henry.

Cullasaja Gorge Volunteer Fire Department will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
