Obituary for D. Dean Smith

D. Dean Smith, 90, went to be with God, Sunday, June 1, 2008.

Born in Petersburg, VA, Ms. Smith was the daughter of Charles L. Smith and Daisy B. Dean Smith. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by brother, Leonard Smith and two sisters, Martha Smith Lynch and Sara Bell Smith Fuhr. She graduated in 1935 from Petersburg High School, Graduated from Bellview School of Nursing in New York City in 1938 and earned her BS and Masters Degree from Columbia University. She was a member and former Sunday School teacher of Memorial Methodist Church. Dean was a member of the Federated Women’s Club of Petersburg, VA and also a member of the Burlington Garden Club. She was former director and instructor of nursing at The Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC and dedicated her life to helping others. Dean was a dedicated donor to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Dean is survived by special friends, Shirley Davey, Donna Kress, Elsie Williamson, Teresa Frady and Judy Dodgins all of Franklin; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and long beloved pet, Brittney.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2008 in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Al Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA.

Pallbearers will be Danny Williamson, Donna Kress, Wayne Klimas, David Kinsland, Billy Mashburn and Darrin Burch. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel “Boone” Williamson, Miranda Williamson, Diamond Williamson, Maurice Tipton and Lee Frady.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial Donations can be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
