Obituary for D. L. Huggins

D. L.  Huggins
D.L. Huggins, 81, of Franklin, passed away Friday, December 11, 2009.
A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late Forrest Huggins and Ruth Parrish Huggins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step mother, Sadie Huggins and an infant sister, Annette Huggins.
He served in the U.S. Army for three years during the Korean conflict before returning to Franklin and graduating from Western Carolina University with a teaching degree. He served as a public school teacher in Georgia and North Carolina. In 1964, he joined the National Park Service and worked in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia; Fort Matanzas, Florida; Aztec Ruins, New Mexico; and Arkansas Post National Memorial. He retired in 1989. After retirement he lived in Gillett, Arkansas and Franklin. He enjoyed gardening, keeping bees, and watching Braves baseball. He was a member of the Macon County Bee Club and attended Burningtown Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Irene Stevenson Huggins; two sons Darwin Huggins and wife Robin of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Joe Huggins and wife Kim of Benton, Arkansas; two brothers, Henderson Huggins of Cape Cateret, NC and Bernard Huggins of Franklin; sister, Joyce Kinsland of Franklin and five grandchildren Drew, Laura, Bradley, Grace and Ben Huggins.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Reverends Charles Stevens and Randy Drinnon will officiate. Burial will be at the Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
