Chris Collins Cartwright, 89, of Highlands, NC, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2007.
Born in Henry County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Collins and Myrtle Barbara Clements Collins. She spent most of her life in Miami, FL where she and her husband raised two children, Jerri and Red. As a young woman, Chris worked for F.W. Woolworth, Southern Bell, the postal service and the US government. After World War II, she enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry at Southern Underwriters. She saw the company grow from three employees to 103 before her retirement. After Southern Underwriters was acquired by Ryder Systems, she was president of Ryder Credit Union for two years in addition to her usual responsibilities. Chris was a member of St. Cyprians Episcopal Church.
She is survived by a son, Red Fifer of Macon County, NC; daughter, Jerri Lee Fifer of Macon County, NC; three grandchildren, Hillary Fifer Ledford and husband Derrick of Charlotte, Brittany Lynn Stewart of Charlotte, NC and Collins Nash Broyles of Macon County, NC; one great granddaughter, Finley Grace Ledford of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 13, at St. Agnes Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dorothy Pratt will officiate.
Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
