Obituary for Charles Richardson Hunnicutt

Charles Richardson  Hunnicutt
Charles Richardson Hunnicutt, 88, of Franklin, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 27, 2010, joining his beloved wife Edith of 66 years who predeceased him by one month.

Born on August 27, 1921 in Macon County, he was the son of the late William Emory Speer Hunnicutt and Blanche Inez Sweet Hunnicutt. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Emory Hunnicutt, Catherine Hunnicutt Perce, Ora Sue Hunnicutt Reese and May Inez Hunnicutt Crawford. Charles graduated from Franklin High School where he excelled in sports. Active in the Boy Scouts, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and attended the first National Jamboree. During WWII, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a navigator on B-17’s flying out of Glatton, England. He flew 30 missions and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After the war, he completed college at the University of Georgia where he earned his degree in Agricultural Engineering. He then began his career with the US Forest Service. Over the years he had assignments in Washington, D.C., Ogden, UT, McCall, ID, Montgomery, AL and Gainesville, GA. He retired in 1978 and returned to Franklin. Until recently, for most of his adult life Charles pursued his favorite pastime, woodworking. His home and those of his children contain many pieces he made over the years.

He is survived by three sons, Richard C. Hunnicutt and wife Jayne of Franklin, Joseph E. Hunnicutt and wife Colleen of Charlotte, NC and Howard J. Hunnicutt and wife Elizabeth of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, James McNabb Hunnicutt and wife Brandi, Patrick Michael Hunnicutt and Christopher Neil Hunnicutt; great grandchildren, Kellen Rex Hunnicutt and Agatha Kathleen Hunnicutt; his younger brother, George L. Hunnicutt of Waynesville and numerous nieces, nephews and others among his extended family.

A Memorial Service will be held for him and his wife Edith at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Rick Potts will officiate. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
