Obituary for Charles L. Browning

Charles L. Browning, of Harrison Avenue, Franklin, N.C. died on February 6, 2007.
He was born in Bryson City, N.C. to J. Frank and Etta Bradley Browning, and spent most of his early years in Macon County. He was a descendent of Rev. Humphrey Posey who established most of the first Baptist Churches in Western North Carolina in the early 1800's and William H. Morrison, Sr., one of the early Macon County settlers and large landholders. He was a nephew of the late State Senator Vance A. Browning.
Mr. Browning was a graduate of Franklin High School, Brevard College, and Western Carolina University. At Western Carolina University he was President of the Student Body and a leading actor in Western Carolina Players. He also had leading roles in the Cherokee outdoor production of "Unto These Hills." He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. His career in Civil Service included positions with the Atomic Energy Commission, the Department of the Navy, Washington, D.C., and the National Climatic Center, Department of Commerce, in Asheville, N.C. As Procurement Officer, he received many awards for outstanding performance, before his retirement.
After retirement, Mr. Browning returned to Macon County where he was involved in local activities, serving on the Macon County Planning Board, Macon County Industrial Development Board, and Macon County Social Services Board. In 1985, N.C. Governor Jim Hunt conferred on Charles's membership in "The Order of the Long Leaf Pine" for outstanding service to North Carolina.
Mr. Browning is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Opal Jones Browning of Franklin, and three sisters, Christine B. Loiry Austin, Texas, Helen B. Reece Bryson City, N.C. and Luetta B. Cash Franklin, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one's favorite charity.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 10, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Ernie Sanders and Judge Jud Downs will officiate. A reception will follow. Burial service will be private in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
