Obituary for Arbutus McCoy (Welch)

Arbutus McCoy, 91, of Franklin, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2023.

Arbutus was born in Macon County on May 6, 1932. She was raised in the Oak Grove Community of Macon County. Her mother, Birdell McGaha Welch and her stepfather, Floyd Welch created a loving home with the support of Arbutus’s grandparents, Charles and Nancy McGaha.

Arbutus was an independent and resourceful person, who spent a great deal of her life helping others. Spending the majority of her life as a homemaker, Arbutus provided unfailing support to her children, her grandchildren, her extended family, and her friends.

Arbutus was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener and spent many hours each year preserving the food she grew. Arbutus loved to spend time with friends and family playing games, cooking delicious meals, and talking about the latest book she had read.

In addition to her parents, Arbutus was preceded in death by her husband, Rozell Moody McCoy and her five brothers: Troy Arvil Welch, James Kenneth Welch, Willard Douglas Welch, Robert Dale Welch, and Charles Edward Welch.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda McCoy Wyatt and her husband, Stephen Arnold Wyatt; her son, Randy Rozell McCoy, and her sister, Patricia Welch Morgan and her husband, Jack Morgan.

Arbutus has three grandsons: Joseph Rozell McCoy, David Ray McCoy, and Stephen Neil McCoy Wyatt. She has five great grandchildren: Kenzee Brooke Heath, Heather Mary McCoy, Ryder Cash McCoy, Riley Jane Love, and Isaiah Michael Grasty.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, October 10th, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12-1, one hour prior to the service. Rev. Roy Lowe will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
