Obituary for William "Jesse" Coggins

William "Jesse" Coggins
William “Jesse” Coggins, 79, died on October 31 at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, following a brief illness.

Born June 8, 1937 to Leonard and Mattie Buchanan Coggins of Cullowhee, Jesse was an honors graduate of Gaston College and veteran of the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines. He retired from SKF Corporation (formerly CR Industries) after an almost 40-year career, walking out of the building for the final time at age 77. Having lived in several states, cities, and countries, he passed on his love of travel, culture, and knowledge to his children -- Kristie Lynn Coggins (married to Jeremy Gregg) of Rio Rancho, New Mexico and Jason Matthew Coggins (married to Dara Williams) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Never one to miss a deal, he loved bargain shopping and was well known by many local shop managers and cashiers.
His faith in God was strong – something he also passed along to his children -- and he often attended local church services.
He’s also survived by brothers Tim and Thomas, sister Edna Coggins Mahaffey (married to Dwight Mahaffey), sisters-in-law Jolene Coggins and Lynda Elders Coggins, dozens of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alvin and Marvin, and sister-in-law Doris Gibson Coggins. Jason and Kristie would like to thank the Hospice employees of Angel Medical and Harris Regional, his caregivers at the Hermitage of Sylva, Pastor Steve Reeves, and the employees of Macon Funeral Home.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 5th in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, Jesse requested contributions be made to the National Audubon Society. He loved all animals, but birds were his favorite.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
