Donald Alexander Swanson
Obituary for Donald Alexander Swanson--------May 7, 1935—Sept.8, 2017

Our “mighty warrior” has “won” his battle with cancer of 15 years and paralysis of 10 plus months. He is now “walking” with His Lord and Savior. He was born on May 7, 1935 in Minneapolis, MN to Ray and Elena Swanson. He was predeceased by his parents and his VERY special sister, Judi Mahoney of Mpls.

He is survived by his wife, “Min”, of 57 years, and his sons, Randy (Naysha) & Judd (Estelle), 4 step grandchildren, as well as a niece and 4 nephews plus many other relatives and close friends.

He graduated from West HS in Mpls and attended the Univ. of MN, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He majored in Bus. Adm. and then enlisted in the USAF reserve and served for 6 years. He worked in various financial positions in Mpls and Miami, FL, where they lived from 1969-1993. Then he and his wife moved to Franklin, where he served as the Macon County Fin. Officer and then traveled for Drake Enterprises, representing their software program in Indiana and Ohio (a job he really loved). His other special financial positions included Treas. of First Alliance Church of Franklin, where he also served as an elder and sang in the choir (which he dearly loved, also). He was treasurer of Chestnut Ridge HOA, and he continued serving as Senator Jim Davis’ treas. and as a financial guardian until the time of his death.
Don’s love of God and Country was proven in all he did. His political positions were serving as the Macon County Republican Chmn in 1995 and also the Director of Macon County FreedomWorks for 7 years (which his Reg’l Dir. said was considered #1 in the country). His love of political issues allowed for him to write a weekly conservative article, called “The Right Stuff” for The Highlands Newspaper for 7 years. In 2008, Don rec’d the John William Pope, Sr. Award for the Advancement of Freedom in NC. He loved travelling, and he and his wife visited the Caribbean and the other parts of the USA, as well as to Europe several times, two being cruises—one to Scandinavia and Russia (where his ancestors were from) and one a 50th Anniversary Mediterranean cruise. He also had an interesting hobby of making models of Western European architecture……houses, gov’t bldgs. and castles of which he had a LARGE collection. Don was an avid spectator sportsman and investment day trader.

The family wishes to thank Angel Hospice Carepartners for their WONDERFUL care and concern over the past 10 months and Dr. Aruwani for his medical support. Thank you to our family all our friends and the folks in our FAC family. It has been an awesome time of “God’s Amazing Grace“.

A Celebration of God’s Amazing Grace will be held in memory of Don, at 2 p.m. Monday, September 18th at First Alliance Church. Rev. Scott Eichelberger, Rev. Kris Gerow, Rev. Evan Jensen, Rev. Dick Brown and Rev. David Phillips will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Don to Angel Home Care and Hospice at 170 Church St., Franklin, NC or the Smoky Mt. Pregnancy Center at 226 East Palmer, Franklin, NC.

Macon Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
