Condolences

Condolence From: Gary Kauffman
Condolence: I will always remember Doreen in the forest hunting for cerulean warblers and her excitement one night when she caught a hoary bat. Anne and I always enjoyed feeding her animals including her horses when she was away. Both of us are saddened for Doreen's passing far too young. We will miss her and the memories of a happy simplier time. I hope Doreen is at peace now.

Condolence From: Pen and Carol Ann Smith
Condolence: We were very sad to find out that Doreen had passed away. During our summer visits to Franklin, Doreen would join us for dinners and entertain us with stories of her travels and goings on in Franklin. Our visits to Franklin will no longer be the same.

Condolence: Doreen was influential to me when I first started work for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission in fall 2003 and was the first USFS person I met and the first to reach out to collaborate--immediately! The day I met her in late fall 2003 or early winter 2004 at a meeting, she hauled me off to lunch and wanted to brainstorm about bogs and ephemeral pools and reptiles and amphibians on the National Forest. She did a lot of good things for wildlife conservation and seemed to enjoy the comradery of other wildlife biologists and going out to help with field work every chance she could. I hope she got to travel and enjoy her farm and horses like she wanted to after retirement. She will be missed.

Condolence: Doreen was the first person I really got to know when I moved to the district in 1991. She took me out on her horses, and actually came with me to the birthing classes for my first child. She loved her genealogy and getting closer to her family. Only wish we had known, she will be missed

Condolence From: Rod McClanahan, Consulting Wildlife Biologist
Condolence: I had the pleasure of working alongside Doreen for 12 years, and she was the consumate wildlife professional. During her last year of Forest Service employment, I was doing some Indiana bat summer surveys for her, and she told me she was planning on retiring at the end of the year, and traveling around the world. I hope she was able to fulfill her retirement goals to see the world. The wildlife profession lost a first class biologist when she retired from the profession, and we have lost a great friend. She will be greatly missed.

Condolence: I am so saddened to hear of Doreen's passing. Doreen trained me as a newly hired biologist on the Nantahala in 1992. We had a lot of fun times going to the woods together. We surveyed birds and attended Carolina Bird Club field trips together. I would drive about 1.5 hours to her house in Franklin to ride horses with her (Sheena and Foxtrot). She is the reason I have Boykin spaniels as she had a female named "Jessie" with a ton of personality. I returned to the mountains in 2009 and 2010 to trap bats for her, and it was really great seeing her again. She had a zest for life, and I'm happy she enjoyed herself in retirement. She was taken from us way too soon. Rest In Peace and thank you for your friendship.

Condolence: I knew Doreen only briefly, having met at the dog park in Franklin. A former resident of Franklin, I spend winters in Franklin. Our dogs became good friends, and Doreen and I had many pleasant visits while our dogs played. I missed her this past winter, did not know she was ill. I will cherish good memories of Doreen.

Condolence: I first met Doreen in 1979 when she was a graduate student at Auburn and I was the Forest Wildlife Biologist for the National Forests in Alabama. I had spoken at a meeting of the Auburn Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society. Doreen was an officer of that organization and one of the bright young people aspiring to a career in the wildlife sciences. In closing, I wished the students well in their academic and professional careers and told them I hoped that they all went to work for the Forest Service. Little did I know at the time that four of the five Chapter officers, Doreen included, would indeed make careers in the Forest Service. I was gratified to see each of them become fine professional biologists and valuable Forest Service employees.

In addition to being an exceptional biologist, Doreen was an exceptional person. She was kind and had the gentlest of hearts. She loved all things wild as I do. So, it is with infinite sadness that I bid you farewell, Old Friend. May you sail the aeons with fair winds astern.

Condolence: My heart was saddened when I learned that Doreen had died. Doreen was our neighbor in Franklin from 2005 - 2014. She was such a great person who loved her work for the Forest Service, her doggies and horses. Thinking of all the good neighborly times we had together and stories she would share about her work travels with the bats in the caves. Rest in Peace Doreen.
